frozen moments

A limited edition (20 copies) chapbook of haiku written by a dear friend. Cut size is 4 x 6.5 inches. Single signature, 5-hole stab binding, cover is Bugra Brick over 20 pt chipboard and endpapers are Bugra Evergreen. Text is 10 pt Centaur and Arrighi; title is 16 pt Centaur. I feel like my printing has definitely improved with this project, e.g. better control of the inking and registration, and my folding, sewing, and gluing of text blocks also seems to be getting (a little) better. That said, I have recently started volunteering at Cloverleaf Studio and Jace Graf might not agree with the latter assessment…

HAIKU haikai no michi

A little chapbook of haiku. Single signature, 5-hole stab binding, cover is Bugra paper over 20pt chipboard. Text is Centaur and Arrighi; title is Univers 65. There is a tad of red. Printed ten copies, mostly as a learning experience (which it was). I would love to do a chapbook of some of my friend’s haiku…

Life is what happens

A quick broadside as a housewarming present for Amy and Scotty. Pleased that they picked this Lennon quote; wise words. Set in 36 pt Univers 65. Printed one copy on 12 x 18 card stock and will put it in simple black frame.

The Three Goals

David Budbill’s short verse “The Three Goals” is perfect broadside material. Insightful, funny, Zen pearls. I set the poem in 30 pt Univers 76 (italic), printed red, and 30 pt Univers 65. Printed 10 copies on 12 x 18 card stock (paper was given to me by the kind folks at Vertallee Press and I have no idea of the brand or the weight). Budbill, a prolific American poet and playwright who passed away in 2016, lived in the mountains of northern Vermont - as a bit of a recluse - for 40 years.

Type Wise

To get to know the type and the press better – and to learn some binding skills, as a first project I printed a specimen book of some selected text faces. One signature, ten types faces, 32 pages, on Ecru White Crane’s Lettra paper (120 gsm). Set the upper and lowercase of each typeface and then composed a paragraph of type wisdom (e.g. words from Bringhurst, Gill, Updike, Tschichold, Upton) using the face. Printed 20 copies and have bound them in several different ways with help from Mary Baughman (Austin Book Arts Center) and Jace Graf (Cloverleaf Studios). Has been a real learning experience. The impression on the last pages is significantly better than my earlier efforts. Have also learned that I love binding stuff, and I don’t get PVA all over the expensive Bugra paper anymore. Progress.
